In the early period after the Mongol invasions of the thirteenth century, the princes of Russia tried to preserve some independence from asiatic rule in the northern forests, and the most important northern city was that of Novgorod. This city, with its busy trade and its legendary prince, Alexander Nevsky, forms part of the background of the 'Tartar' chapter of RUSSKA.
